"Rites of the Wild" is a striking black-and-white photography series that takes you deep into the primal world of deer during the rut, set against the haunting backdrop of Wollaton Park. This series isn’t just about capturing the beauty of these majestic creatures; it's about delving into their ancient, instinctual behaviors, revealing the raw power and aggression that defines this pivotal period in their life cycle.

The rut is not simply a spectacle; it’s a primal, almost ceremonial event—a rite of passage that has echoed through nature for millennia. By using high-contrast black and white photography, I strip away the distractions of color, drawing focus to the elemental forces that drive these animals. The absence of color sharpens the viewer’s attention on the physical forms, movements, and intense emotions of the deer, creating a powerful visual narrative that lays bare the timeless and relentless struggle for dominance and survival.

The dramatic nature of the rut is amplified by the stark contrast of light and shadow. Each image becomes a study of tension, where the interplay between form and movement is heightened. In the absence of color, the focus shifts to the muscular structure, the wild eyes, and the intensity of the battle between rival stags, casting the viewer into a world stripped to its most basic, primal elements.

I’ve chosen a square aspect ratio for this series, which introduces a sense of containment and intensity. Each frame feels as though it captures a wild moment within a confined space, mirroring the reality that these ancient rituals are being enacted within the artificial boundaries of Wollaton Park. The park, a man-made sanctuary, transforms into a stage where nature’s rawest instincts clash with human-imposed limits. This paradox adds a layer of psychological tension, as the park's barriers reflect the unsettling juxtaposition of wildness and entrapment.

"Rites of the Wild" invites you to confront the tension between nature's ferocity and the artificial boundaries we place around it. It’s a haunting reminder of the timeless struggle for survival, power, and dominance, playing out in a world that increasingly limits wildness.
